Season 2008/09 4th XI Round 3 V Footscray Edgewater at Schramms no.2 The second game of our double header weekend started well. Finally a toss was won and we decided to bat on a wearing Schramms no.2 wicket. Another poor start for the lions meant that we were reduced to 6/56 and struggling again. However, some intelligent lower order batting from Michael Sanderson (30), Angus Watson (28) and Michael Cook (17*) got us to 147 off 38.3 overs. Defending such a low total it was decided that spin was a option with the new ball to attempt catch the Footscray batsman off guard. Captain Steven Wotherspoon (3/26 off 9) and Angus Watson (2/20 off 9) got us off to an brilliant start leaving Footscray reeling at 5/24. This bowling was followed up by Michael Cook (3/25 off 9) and further restricted Footscray to 8/72. However, some good lower order batting and a calculated innings from Gobbe (54*) combined with a terrible umpiring decision saw Footscray limp through to 9/127 still requiring 20 to win. However Footscray some how managed to go through unscathed and win with 3 balls to spare. 4th XI Round 2 V Richmond at A.K Line Reserve We lost the toss again and were sent in on a hard but grassy pitch. After safely getting to 20 we were then in trouble at 3/29. A quickfire 28 from Daniel Heatley got us to 4/61 but poor shot selection against slower bowling had us reeling at 9/113 on a pitch that probably needed 200 minimum to be effective. A handy last wicket partnership between Angus Watson (18*) and Matt James (8*) got us to 9/139 off our 45 and at least left us a target to bowl at. A sharp opening spell from Angus Watson (3/32 off 9) had Richmond in a tricky situation of 3/52 however, no one else contributed with ball and some sloppy fielding meant Richmond easily chased down our total with relative ease and won with a bonus point finishing at 3/140 off 29 overs. 4th XI Round 1 V Essendon at home. We lost the toss and were sent in a what looked to be a typical schramms no. 2 wicket. We got off to a solid start getting to 33 before we lost our first wicket. However, after looking in toruble at 3/61 a 64 run partnership between Ash Jayasinghe (75) and Trent Grabham (23) took us into a solid position. After once again being in trouble at 7/159 and running out of overs, some calculated hitting from Michael Cook (43*) supported by first gamer Angus Watson (12*) saw us through to a very competitive 7/216 off our 45 overs. Essendon started well and got through the new ball with ease. After losing 2 wickets with the score at 73 the game seemed to be in control and it seemed to be our game to win right until Essendons' number three bat, Stephens (81*) took the game to us with around 8 overs to go when they required 8 an over to win the game. Essendon won the game with 5 balls to spare the key to their victory was to keep wickets in hand as they finished 4 down. Season 2007/08 Rnd 3 4th XI vs Hawthorn - Monash away We lost the toss on a good pitch and after having Hawthorn 1/0 they made the best of the conditions and ended making 4/243 off their 45 overs. The good nature of the pitch was reflected as only one wicket fell to a bowler and the other three were run outs. The job was always going to be extremely tough but after vailiant efforts from Ash Jayasinghe (71) and James Considine (56) we managed to post a respectable but still not match winning 5/193.
Rnd 2 4th XI v Camberwell Magpies 13/10/07 at Schramms #2 Fitz/Donc 10/132 def Camberwell 10/107
We batted first and got bowled out for a dissapointing 132 after loosing our last 5 wickets for only 10 runs. Many soft outs that could of been avoided however Spoon was able to contribute with 31 along with Vardi 24. The highest contributor to our total was Camberwell with a handy 42 extras.
Bowling wise we were able to bowl Camberwell out for 107. The standout with the ball was Dan Mu with 4/19 off 9overs (3 of them outs being bowled). R.Mifsud at one stage got on a hatrick but was unable to capitalise. The boys enthusiasm in the field was reflected in our bowling performance, we were able to hold onto our catches and snag a run out. Well done on our first win for the season. Kenan Alev
